Al Fresco – Concentration?Stillness?

The weather has turned, like all conditioned phenomena, the weather is subject to change (Annica) 🙂

So it is outside we go, under the tree for today’s meditation.   Whilst the wind blew through my hair it came to me that it was not the wind moving but my mind in a stream of perceptions that were, themselves conditioned.

As the mind settled into a wide, still awareness the thought occurred that samadhi is better translated, as Ajhan Brahm proposes, as “stillness” rather than “concentration” that is usually used.  If the term derives from samadha, which is more like to bring together, or samatha, which is calm abiding.    The vishudimagga leans towards “the centring of consciousness and consciousness concomitants evenly and rightly on a single object…the state in virtue of which consciousness and its concomitants remain evenly and rightly on a single object, undistracted and unscattered” which I guess is where the single-pointedness derives.   Hey, ho more reason to use the original Pali and several translations…
